Do you own a motorcycle or ATV that you use for recreational purposes and need a place to keep it safe and clean while you’re not out enjoying the fun? If you don’t have room in the garage, or, would prefer to have it out-of-sight, consider a self-storage unit.

If you decide to employ a storage company, talk with the manager before signing any agreements. Keeping a bike or All-terrain vehicle in the same unit as your other belonging may leave lingering odors in your clothing and furniture, so look for a storage facility that have units on the ground floor sized for your machines. And, ask the manager if they have regulations regarding emptying the gasoline tank.

Do you plan to do maintenance while your vehicle is stored? Get a unit with enough elbowroom to work. If you have more than one vehicle, for convenience, find a space where they can all be stored together.

Do you live in snow country? Look for climate controlled storage units to keep the fluids from getting gummy or freezing.

Do you plan to store your bike and/or ATV for several months without use? Take the time to perform maintenance prior to moving them to your storage unit. There are many websites with detailed, step-by-step, instructions on how to do winter maintenance, so we won’t list them here. However, using a battery charger, changing the oil, and giving it a wax job are a good start. Motorcycles can be elevated on blocks and cloth covers are available for both bikes and ATVs.

Do you have other storage questions regarding your motorcycle or ATV? Our resident managers in Fountain Valley at (714) 964-1607 and in Riverside at (951) 735-0211, will be happy to help you with all your self-storage needs.

In Southern California, our seasons aren’t as apparent as they are back East. Especially now with the drought, the weather seems to be the same most of the year. Still, you may have belongings and toys that you use seasonally, such as barbeques, kids bicycles, and golf clubs for the summer, or skis, snowboards, and snow jackets and boots during the winter months. Maybe you have a convertible that you love to drive in the Southern California sun, that just sits there during your “busy” months of the year. Or, a recreational vehicle that takes up too much space in the driveway.

If you find that you don’t have enough room to store all the fun stuff you own, one solution is to rent a self-storage unit. Store your summer things during the winter and your winter things during the summer. Problem solved!

Step One

Take inventory of your belongs before you store them, so you remember what you have, and aren’t tempted to buy another one because you don’t remember for sure. A spreadsheet and/or video camera will help with this. And, remember to update it twice a year, for all the new fun stuff you do buy.

Step Two

Call our managers in Fountain Valley at (714) 964-1607 or Riverside at (951) 735-0211 for help with selecting the storage unit size appropriate for your toys. Our managers will be waiting for you with answers to your questions.

Step Three

Pack up your out-of-season toys and head on over! We’ll show you around and help you get situated.

What’s next? Enjoy your uncluttered house and your leisure time in the playground called California!

Are you taking an extended holiday to another country and wondering what to do with your stuff here in the states? If you own your own home or live in a rental you love, you could lease out your place, fully furnished, for six months to a year, or have a friend keep an eye on the place. If, however, you are not attached to your current living situation, placing your belongings in self-storage is a good option, as the monthly cost is considerable less than rent.

Here are a few tips to help you have a carefree vacation:

Tip #1: Tell Someone

Let a family member or friend know where you stored your belongings and ask them if you can use them as a secondary contact person for the storage unit. Since the time zone will likely be different in your part of the world, having someone in the U.S.A. makes calling the storage company easier.

Tip #2: Contact Us Form

Before you rent the unit, look for a Contact Us form on the storage company’s website. If the company has more than one location, see if you can send email directly to the managers of the storage place in your city.

Tip #3: Keep Payment Option Current

If you will be paying your monthly storage fee by credit card or debit card, check that the expiration date on the card is well past the time you plan to return. If not, ask your card company for a replacement card that will last longer, before you leave.

Tip #4: Cover Your Expenses

If you decide to use your debit card, check that there is enough money in the account each month to pay the storage fee, plus any other expenses you currently have set on auto-payments. With a credit card, check your limit and setup monthly auto-payments in advance. Plan long-term. You might like it so much that you decide to stay an extra month or two.

Tip #5: Buy a Quality Lock

Buy a quality combination, padlock, or disk lock, then, decide if there is anything in storage that will be needed by someone while you are away. If yes, consider leaving the keys or the combination with someone living near your unit, that you absolutely trust with your belongings. If not, then pack them away where you will find them upon your return.

Traveling abroad can be fun as well as stressful. We hope these tips add to your fun and reduce the stress. Also, if you have a car or truck to store, both our Fountain Valley and Riverside locations offer outdoor storage along with indoor storage.

Wishing you a memorable holiday! Cheers!

As a small business owner, you are always looking for ways to be more efficient and to improve the bottom line. Renting a self-storage unit can help you with both, by providing an inexpensive place to store archived files, excess supplies, equipment, and overflow inventory. You have the flexibility of moving to a larger or smaller unit in the same location, or, renting a second unit, as your storage needs change.

Here are some ideas for using a self-storage unit to improve your small business sales:

Are you a cabinetmaker? Setup your storage unit as a showroom and invite potential clients over during hours of operation for the storage facility.

Do you sell products on eBay? Store your inventory in a self-storage unit and include a table and supplies so you can easily box items to be mailed.

Do you have a booth for industry conventions? Is it too large for your garage? Store the booth and your sales literature in a mini-storage unit. Your spouse will thank you!

Gardeners, plumbers, electricians, and carpenters, where are you storing your trucks and heavy equipment? In your driveway? Many storage facilities rent spaces for vehicles and trailers.

Samples, samples, samples, living in your closet? Do yourself a favor and move them to storage, so you can find your sweaters.

Buried in paperwork? In this age of electronics, it’s a wonder how so much paper still accumulates. Drive it over to your storage unit and get it out of your way. You’ll be able to access it when you need it.

The Storage Place has self-storage units available in many sizes, ranging from 20 sq. ft. to 400 sq. ft., depending upon the location chosen. You can easily rent one to fit your small business needs by contacting our on-site managers. Our locations are freeway close and are even open on Sundays!

Read more about our locations:

Fountain Valley: (714) 964-1607

Is your boat and trailer taking up too much room in your driveway? Is your significant other tired of parking their car at the curb? Are you looking for a self-storage facility to store your boat and wondering about the details?

Storage Facility Location

The first thing to consider when looking for a storage place is location. Look for a unit that is either near your home or one that is close to your favorite body of water. A facility that is convenient to a major freeway is also helpful, so you don’t waste precious boating time driving long distances for pick up and drop off.

Our Fountain Valley facility is near the 405 Freeway and our Riverside location is off the 91 Freeway a few miles east of the 15 Freeway.

Size of Your Boat

The next consideration is the size of your boat. Is it a dingy that will fit inside a unit with a rollup door, or, are you looking for an exterior space to park a larger craft? If you’re looking for an enclosed unit, check that there’s enough room to easily maneuver your truck and boat down the aisle. See if you can turn your trailer 90 degrees and back it up without scraping against the storage unit walls. For larger boats, you won’t have walls to contend with, however, there may be an RV or boat on either side of you. For convenience, see if there’s enough room to pull your boat forward into and out of your space.

Security

Since you may not see your boat for months at a time, look for a facility that has a security gate, security cameras, and resident managers.

Winter Boat Storage Tips

In Southern California, we don’t have winters harsh enough to keep boats out of the water all season long. However, we do have work and school and sometimes it even rains, so there may be months where your boat will sit unused. Consider performing maintenance when you store the boat so you can get it in the water faster in the spring.

Check your boat for cracks, torn sails, and other items in need of repair, and, while you’re at it, check all the belts, hoses, and clamps. Keep a log and set a date to have the work down. Even better, finish the work before you store the boat, so you don’t have to think about it when you’re out on the slopes skiing.

Drain all water, scrub the deck and hull, and clean the interior areas, including removing all perishables. And, remember to flush out the head and holding tanks. Maybe your new storage facility has a hose hook up for your use. If not, wash the boat thoroughly before transferring it to storage.

Check with your local boat supply about the best additives for your boat’s engine and follow the manufacture’s instructions. The cooling system and pumps may need antifreeze as well.

Depending upon the size, you can cover your boat (or part of it) with plastic tarps, from Home Depot or Lowes, to keep it dry and clean. Tie the tarps down securely to the boat to keep them from blowing off in the wind.

Important Note: To keep the warranty valid, remember to consult the owner’s manual for the make and model of your boat for specific instructions from the manufacture.

Do you have additional storage questions regarding your boat? Our on-site managers in Fountain Valley at (714) 964-1607 and in Riverside at (951) 735-0211, will be happy to help you with your self-storage needs.

Oh, and, Happy Boating to you!

If you’re a parent of young children, you know how difficult it can be to get your kids to clean up after them. Tripping over a toy in the middle of the night or finding Lego pieces in the laundry isn’t fun. Which parent hasn’t struggled with toys strewn around the house after an active day of play?

It’s been said that a new habit takes 21 days to establish. Use these tips and fun game to entice your children into creating the habit of putting their toys away.

Tip #1: Use Color

Children see color early in life, long before they learn the alphabet and words. Toddlers can distinguish between a DVD of Ariel and a DVD of Finding Dory by the photos, colors, and patterns on the packaging long before they read the actual text. Ask your kids to pick their favorite colors, then, look for storage containers that fit in.

Tip #2: Plastic, Wood, or Wicker

The containers can be colored plastic, wood, or even wicker baskets with colored cloth wrapped around them. Use your imagination and include your kids in the planning.

Tip #3: Add Symbols

Add easily identified symbols, especially for children displaying color blindness. Turn this into an art project by having them create the symbols with cloth, construction paper, or painted directly on wooden boxes. That way they will recognize what they made, plus, this project could keep them busy for an afternoon.

Tip #4: Seats for Storage

For small areas, buy or build cube storage and add comfortable seating on top. The colored containers go inside the cubbyholes, saving space and keeping the area neat. Cubes can also be hung on the wall, or placed under the bed if there is enough height.

Here’s a DIY cube storage project for the do-it-yourself parents out there.

Next: Play the Pick Up Game

So, you’ve selected the colors, added the homemade symbols, and built the storage. Mark your calendar for the next 3 weeks, pick a time of day when the toys will find themselves back into storage, and play the “pick up” game with your kids. Find a song they love to sing, set a timer for five minutes, and get to work play! For the first few days, it might be you doing most of the picking up. After that, make sure they are pitching in, and gradually doing all of the picking up by day 21.

Ready to declutter your home? Here are 7 ideas and tips on how to get your clean-up project going. Some are fun and some are practical.

Tip 1: Start Small

Decluttering an entire home in one day can be daunting. Pick a small area and get to work. Plan to work 1/2-hour per day for several days or weekends. Set yourself up for accomplishment, from the beginning!

Tip 2: Shred, Shred, Shred

Buy your own shredder or watch for shredding opportunities in your city. Look through your filing cabinets and boxes for old utilities bills, expired tax returns, and other papers you no longer need. Shredded paper can be recycled, so it doesn’t take up space in the landfills either.

Tip 3: Mailbox to Recycle Bin

Don’t let flyers, bulk mail, and unwanted ads accumulate in your home! Take them directly from your gate, front door, or mailbox to your recycle bin. Solicitations containing prefilled signup forms can go directly to the shredder or the “to be shredded” pile.

Video: Seven How To Useful Ideas for Decluttering Your Home

Tip 4: Get Off Solicitation Lists

The best way to unclutter your home is to not let it get cluttered in the first place. When you receive offers in the mail, call them and ask to be removed from their mailing list, or, write “Remove From List” on their form and mail it back in the envelope they provided. Some offers even include prepaid postage!

Remember to put a big “X” across the actual form, so they clearly see that you are Not signing up for their product or service.

Tip 5: Turn on the Music and Dance!

Turn on your favorite music and do the cleaning dance! Select one room of your home. Pick up items and place them into 4 piles (trash, recycle, shred, and give away) dancing as you go. At the end of 15-20 minutes, take the trash and the recycle out to the appropriate bins. Then, sit next to your shredder and shred away while you rest and sing along with the music. Shredded paper goes into a paper bag and then into the recycle bin. Give away items go into bags or boxes. If your charity is still open, take them over, otherwise leave them near the front door and plan a quick trip for the next day.

Tip 6: Let Go of Old Clothes

If your socks have holes in them, mend them or trash them. If you’re holding on to the sweater you wore during your last big breakup, donate it to charity. Clothes that are too big or too small can go to friends or sold at a garage sale. Ditto for shoes.

Tip 7: Rent a Storage Unit

Storage units are a good place to storage items that are used seasonally or occasionally. We have articles on “The 5 Most Important Things to Know About Your Self-Storage Facility” and “How to Organize Your Self-Storage Unit,” to help you get started.

We hope this helps you getting going on your decluttering project! Rememer, an uncluttered home goes a long way in creating a happy home.

Are you remodeling, downsizing, or turning your (now adult) kid’s room into a mini-theater? Do you have a mattress (and box springs) in good condition that you want to store for future use? Check out these tips on how to store a mattress.

Tip One: Look for a Clean, Dry Place to Store Your Mattress

You might be tempted to store a mattress in your garage or basement, but before you do check for moisture, mold, and water damage possibilities. Do you live in a damp climate? If your water heater leaks will the mattress be in the path of a major spill? If your garage or basement is not a clean, dry place, perhaps you would be better off using a self-storage unit.

Tip Two: Clean the Mattress Before Storage

Take the time to clean both sides of your mattress before storing it away. Upholstery cleaner or baking soda can help! Vacuum well and air out until dry. Stubborn stains can be removed with hydrogen peroxide or liquid detergent. For details, check out the many tutorials on YouTube.com on how to clean your mattress.

Tip Three: Use a Breathable Cover or Plastic

After a thorough cleaning and airing out, use a breathable mattress cover to keep it clean and moisture free while stored away. Thick plastic sheets will work in a pinch but can trap moisture allowing mold and mildew to grow.

Tip Four: Transfer Your Mattress in a Truck

How often have you seen someone moving a mattress by placing it on the hood of their car? This is an inexpensive way to transport but can cause a traffic accident and at the very least put bends in the mattress. A truck with a flatbed large enough to accommodate the mattress is safer for the driving and for the mattress.

Tip Five: Store Your Mattress Flat with Nothing on Top

Once you arrive at your storage unit, plan to store the mattress flat and with nothing on top. Storing a mattress on its side leaves it susceptible to sagging and bending. Placing heavy objects on top of a mattress can damage springs and create wear on the fabric. Wood pallets or flat furniture can be used to keep the mattress off a cold, damp floor.

Tip Six: Use a Dehumidifier

If your storage area is not climate controlled, a dehumidifier can help by removing moisture. Check the mattress often to see that it is staying dry.

Do you have framed pictures or mirrors that you will be storing in your self-storage unit? Are you wondering what’s the best way to wrap them, to keep them clean and undamaged?

If you are storing valuable paintings or prints, enlist the help of a reputable framing company to help you package your items, then store them in a climate controlled storage area.

If your “treasures” are more ordinary, and you just want to keep them clean, dry, and scratch-free, consider the self-storage tips below:

Small Frames

Small frames and small mirrors can be stored in a heavy cardboard box, sandwiched between foam core or heavy cardboard. Remember to cover the box with its lid and mark the box with “Fragile” on all four sides and on the top of the box. Place the box where other boxes will not be stored on top. If dampness or rainwater is a possibility, place the box on a wooden pallet, or on top of your other sturdily packed boxes.

Large Frames

For larger frame, consider these steps to secure your belongings:

Step One: Wrap with Paper

Wrap each frame in heavy, plain white or brown paper to keep the frame and artwork clean. Don’t use newspaper, as it will tear over time, and may transfer inks to your possessions. Fold the paper in the back, as if you are wrapping a present, and use a good quality tape to secure it closed. If there is no glass to protect the painting or print, be extra careful to keep the paper from sticking to the artwork. Don’t tape the wrapping to the frame or artwork, as the glue in the tape may cause discoloration or pull pieces off later.

Step Two: Frame Protectors

Place quality, corrugated frame protectors at all four corners. If they are loose, tape them to the paper. Frame protectors can be purchased at frame stores and on Amazon.

Step Three: Bubble Wrap

Wrap the frame again, this time using bubble wrap. Fold the ends over and secure it with the tape. If you have a little bubble wrap left over, use it to line the box for added padding.

Storage

Find a box or carton large enough and strong to hold your frames, transport it to the storage destination, and locate it close to a wall. To avoid water damage, locate away from potentially leaky pipes and place on a sturdy wooden pallet. Careful transport the wrapped frames and arrange them in the box or carton, standing on one end. If they don’t stay standing, carefully lean them against the wall. Cover everything with a sheet, to keep out the dust.

Have other storage questions? Call our managers in Fountain Valley at (714) 964-1607 and Riverside at (951) 735-0211.
Before you even consider which type of lock to buy for your self-storage unit, check out the facility itself. Is the property fenced and secure? Do gates require an access code? Are there security cameras throughout the property? Do knowledgeable and professional resident managers run the business? When you can say, “Yes” to all of these questions, that’s the time to investigate locks.

Ready? Ok, let’s review your lock options now…

The three most common types of locks include, combination locks, padlocks, and disk locks. Let’s discuss each one separately.

Combination Locks

Combination locks require no keys, so they’re easy to use. However, there are downfalls. First, you need to remember your combination. Forget it and you’ll be spending time either guessing, or, using a hacksaw to break it off. Second, if hacksaw or bolt cutters will work for you, then they’ll work for others as well. Third, many will eventually rust or corrode and will need replacing. Pay extra for a heavy-duty lock with a thick, short shackle made of hardened steel that resists prying, sawing, and cutting. Check the size of the latch and find the largest lock that will fit.

Padlocks

Padlocks use keys, which manipulate pins inside the cylinder to unleash the shackle. How many spy movies have we seen where a keyed lock is picked within seconds, given the right tools? They can also be rekeyed easily or opened with a bump key. Look for a high-quality lock with a thick, short shackle, and bumping countermeasures.

Disk Locks

Disk locks typically cost more. The shrouded design shields the shackle, protecting it from bolt cutters. They are manufactured for outdoor use. And, some have circular keys making it difficult to pick. Sure, you could grind this lock off with a skill saw, but that would make noise and requires electricity.

The reality is that, given the right tools and enough time, any lock can be disabled. Sunlight, rain, the size of the lock, materials used, and outside temperatures all affect the usefulness and longevity of a lock. Sorry for the pun, but the “key” here is to use a lock that causes a would-be thief to pass over your unit because it will cause a commotion, alerting the manager, or take too long to open, leaving them vulnerable to the prying “eyes” of security cameras.

Oh, and while you’re considering which lock to buy, check with your insurance company to see if they give a discount for a particular type of lock.

If you would like to discuss the lock for your self-storage unit in detail, call us in Fountain Valley at (714) 964-1607 and in Riverside at (951) 735-0

Do you have an overflow of books that you would like to store in a self-storage unit? Perhaps your toddler has outgrown some of her storybooks and you want to save them for the next child. Or, your son is off to college and you want make space for other things. Keeping books clean and dry is the key to protecting them from the damage that dirt, water, and heat can impose.

Dirt and Mildew

The first step is to review your books to identify any that are already damaged from dirt, mold or mildew. Plan on cleaning those books thoroughly before storing them away. Dirt can be dusted off with a soft cloth, while removing mold and mildew takes more effort. Check out this article from Biblio.com on how to Identify, Prevent, and Remove Mold and Mildew from Books.”

Video: How to Store Books

Climate Control and Silica Gel

It is best to store books in a climate-controlled storage unit to keep them at temperatures below 70 degree Fahrenheit and humidity between 35 and 55 percent. If a climate-controlled unit is not available in your area, take into consideration your local climate. If you live in an area with weather that produces conditions close to those mentioned above, then silica gel packets can help preserve your books by absorbing excess moisture.

Also consider how valuable the books are to you and how long you plan to keep them. Will you toss those storybooks after child number three has grown or will you save them for your grandchildren to read? Then decide if climate control is required.

Acid Free Boxes

To keep chemicals from leeching into your books, use boxes that are free of acid and lignin. These boxes are often heavy corrugated cardboard with reinforced corners plus lids, which allow the books to breathe.

Some people do use Polyurethane plastic tubs, however, they can trap moisture, so be sure that they are clean and dry before sealing them up. As a test, you can leave a tightly sealed plastic box in your unit with a single piece of paper inside. Then, check back in a week to see if moisture or mildew has formed on that paper.

Stacking Books

Stacking books with their spines upwards will cause them to warp. It is better for the books to be stacked standing on edge as on a shelf. Place them close enough to keep them from falling over but not so close that they crimp and tear when you remove them later.

Shelves or Wooden Pallets

When it rains, water sometimes finds its way into a storage unit. To prevent water damage, protect your books by placing the boxes on shelves or wooden pallets, keeping them off the floor.

No Direct Heat or Sunlight

While your storage unit will not have windows, it might have a south-facing wall that can heat up during the day. Temperature changes from day-to-night can make books brittle, while actual sunlight will fade them. See if you can rent a unit that is not subject to extreme temperature changes.

Rodents and Bugs

Remember to avoid any boxes that are dirty themselves or that have odors that will attract rodents and bugs. Rodents can eat through the cardboard boxes and ruin books.

Silverfish, cockroaches, some beetles love to snack on glue and paper. Don’t invite them in! Keep your books away from perishable foods, crumbs, etc. at all times. As perishable foods are one of the items listed in our “What Not to Store in Your Storage Unit” article, this shouldn’t be an issue, but we thought we would mention it anyway.

Old and Rare Books

If you own very old or rare books or collector’s items, you would be better of storage them in a conservatory, not in a self-storage unit. Remember to handle them with clean hands and/or gloves to prevent oils from building up.

If you have questions on how to protect and store books in a storage unit, contact a facility manager.

The holiday season is a magical time filled with joy and laughter. Many anticipate the excitement of placing their shiny lights and decorations on display months in advance. When the festivities fade, packing up each item is not always met with the same enthusiasm. Here are six storage tips to help with you streamline the dismantling and storage process.

Christmas and Hanukkah Lights

Light strings tangle easily. Holiday lights can be carefully wrapped around cardboard strips to keep them tangle free. The wrapped strings are then gently placed in a sturdy box, along with snack size reclosable bags for the extra bulbs. If the box is made of clear plastic, it needs to be stored away from sunlight, so the colorful bulbs don’t fade.

Ornament Organization

Holiday ornaments are best stored in their original box. If boxes are worn out or lost, ornament storage boxes, from local home stores or online, are a great substitute. For small, fragile decorations, clean egg cartons stuffed with tissue paper work well. With each ornament placed into a cell and the lid closed, several egg cartons can then be stored in a sturdy box.

Linens and Towels

Linens and towels need be cleaned and dried, per the manufacturers instructions, before being put away for the year. If there is room, the best place to store them is in a linen closet. Skirt hangers are another option, however, some hanger material can discolor or damage linens, so use quality hangers.

Wrapping Paper, Ribbons, and Bows

There are many ways to store wrapping paper. For rolled paper, consider a shoe caddy, a garment bag, or the longer storage boxes designed for wrapping paper. Folded paper can be stored in smaller storage boxes or caddies, along with the ribbons and bows.

Wreaths

Crush-proof plastic containers for artificial wreaths are sold at most home centers, during the holiday season. Larger wreaths can be wrapped it in plastic and hung from a hook or rod. Another option is to use live plant material, which can be recycled instead of stored.

Trees and Trimmings

Most cities have a recycling plan for live trees too, so storage is not needed. Artificial trees typically pull apart and can be packed back into the original box. If the box has been damaged from years of use, a Christmas tree bag can be purchased. These bags are available in many shapes and sizes and some even have wheels. If there is room, the fully assembled tree can be wrapped in a Christmas tree bag or shrink wrap, leaving it ready for next year’s holiday.

Need More Storage Space?

If your holiday decorations have outgrown your home, consider renting a self-storage unit. Our facilities serving Fountain Valley / Huntington Beach and Riverside / Corona, California offer a variety of unit sizes to accommodate your storage needs.

By following these simple storage tips, you can declutter your home and ensure that your holiday decorations remain in pristine condition for years to come.

Have you been wondering what is the best way to organize your self-storage unit, so you can find your items when you need them? Are you wondering how to layout the unit and how to stack the boxes? The best way to organize your space is the plan ahead, before you even start packing.

Boxes

Use strong boxes, not bags, and pack heavy items, such as books, in smaller boxes. Label each box with a thick marker and include “Fragile, This Side Up” where appropriate.

Plastic Containers

If you have plastic storage containers in your garage, use them to micro-sort your smaller items. This works well for Christmas and Halloween decorations, photo albums, arts and crafts projects, and baby clothes. Use masking tape or paper to label the containers.

Packing the Moving Truck

Whether you rent a truck or use a friend’s, taking time to pack it well will save you time and energy later on when organizing your self-storage unit. First, place lighter boxes in the back of the truck, so they will be pulled out last. Place the heavier boxes, furniture, and equipment in the truck last. This way, when you arrive at your unit, you can place the heavier boxes on the ground and the furniture in the back. Lighter boxes are stored on top of heavier ones, to keep them from falling and to keep them from crushing the boxes below.

Leave an Aisle

Leaving a path down the center of your storage unit will allow you to easily retrieve items later and will keep you from tripping over boxes. Having to rearrange a section of heavy boxes isn’t fun and can prove detrimental to your back.

Storage Shelves

Metal or plastic shelving can be used to provide easier access to individual boxes, without having to move them around. This is handy if you will be looking for certain items on a regular basis. The shelving will take up additional room, so only consider this if it will make your life easier and the unit is large enough to accommodate them.

Sheets and Towels

If you plan to stack furniture on each other, use towels to keep the surfaces from getting scratched. Don’t stack them too high, to avoid them from tumbling down on you later. Sheets can be used to cover furniture to keep out the dust.

Create a Diagram

Creating a chart of which boxes are where will help you find your possession easily the next time you visit your storage unit. You can use graph paper, MS Excel, or just draw it out on a napkin. Anything is better than attempting to remember the contents and location of each box six months from now. Another trick is to number each box and indicate the number on your chart. Then, leave a copy of the chart in your unit, as well as, one at home.

Oh, and before you start packing, read our Self-Storage Packing Tips and Tricks article.
Do you currently or will you soon be renting a self-storage unit? Are you wondering how to keep bugs out of your boxes? The best way to keep pests from overtaking your storage unit is to keep the place clean and to use weather tight containers.

Video: Keeping Bugs Out of Storage Unit

Here are seven tips to help you get started:

#1: Start at Home

If you are moving belongings from your home to a storage facility, take the time to make sure you aren’t bringing unwanted guests with you. If you are pulling boxes out of your garage, or your closets, open them up and inspect them carefully. Consider cleaning everything and placing them in new boxes, before moving them.

#2: Use Weather Tight Containers

Airtight and watertight plastic storage totes will keep out bugs and dampness too. Yes, the upfront expense of plastic versus cardboard is considerably more, but the investment will pay off later. Rodents can quickly chew through cardboard, plus, plastic boxes stack better than cardboard.

#3: Use Vacuum Storage Bags for Your Clothing

Vacuum storage bags serve a two-fold purpose; compacting your clothes and keeping them clean. Wash and dry them first, then fold them neatly, and place them in these thick plastic bags. Follow the manufacture’s instructions to seal them up and store the bags in a plastic tote for easy transport.

#4: Never Store Food

Food attracts bugs and rodents and is on the “What Not to Store in Your Storage Unit” list. Thoroughly wash and dry all containers previously used for food, before packing them up.

#5: Use Zippered Plastic Mattress Covers

Bed bugs can be found in mattresses and bedding. Check and clean your items before moving them out of your home. Once at the storage facility, store them in zippered, plastic mattress covers designed to keep the bed bugs out. Zippered encasements are also available for other upholstered furniture such as couches and chairs.

#6: Wrap Furniture in Plastic

For large or odd shaped items that cannot be stored in boxes or zippered plastic, drape them with heavy plastic or tarps. Wrap the ends around the feet of couches and dresser drawers, then wrap tape around the plastic, making sure you don’t get tape on the furniture itself.

#7: Herbs Instead of Bug Spray

The smell of bug spray and other poisons can be absorbed by clothing and upholstered furniture. Consider using less invasive treatments to deter bugs, such as cedar blocks, sage for snails and slugs, lavender for moths, and cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil.

#8: Ask the Manager

Check with the self-storage office manager to see what they recommend for your location. If they’re doing a good job of keeping the facility clean, keeping your belongings clean and in heavy plastic may be all you need.

Hope these tips help you understand how to keep bugs out of your storage boxes. If you still have questions, feel free to call our California facility managers at:

Your storage unit is a valuable asset for decluttering your home or office, but not everything belongs there. For safety reasons, many items are banned from, not allowed by storage facilities. This guide highlights the most common prohibited items that don’t belong in your self-storage unit. Remember, this list isn’t exhaustive, so always consult your lease agreement for specific restrictions.

Video: What Not to Store in Your Storage Unit

Dangerous and Prohibited Items

Perishable Foods

Fresh produce and meats will eventually spoil and attract pests. Ants are small enough to fit through even the tiniest opening. Rodents can cut through a bag of dry dog or cat food, eat it up, and then dig through your other boxes looking for more. Keep perishable foods out of your storage unit!

Combustible, Flammable, Toxic

Anything that is flammable, combustible, toxic, or otherwise hazardous cannot be stored in a storage unit. Examples of hazardous materials include ammunition, gasoline, motor and lamp oil, compressed gas, propane tanks, acid and other corrosive materials, grease, fertilizers, paint, cleaners, chemicals, narcotics, biological waste, asbestos, and fireworks. Basically anything that can catch fire, explode, corrode, and/or is toxic in any way.

Tip: If you store a lawn mower or other gas operated equipment, empty out the gasoline and oil, then clean the unit before placing it in storage.

Vehicles, Boats, and Trailers

Properly registered vehicles are typically stored in outdoor storage spaces designated for automobiles, cars, boats, recreational vehicles, trailers, trucks, and work vans, not in the indoor storage units. If you do store these items inside, remember to remove the gasoline, as odors can be absorbed by furniture and clothing. For size limits, check out our outdoor storage spaces serving the Fountain Valley / Huntington Beach and Riverside / Corona areas of Southern California.

Plants, Animals, and People

Most people understand that living things need food, water, fresh air, and sunshine to thrive. Live plants, animals, birds, fish in fish tanks, etc. cannot be stored in your unit. Deceased animals or plants cannot be stored either, as they will eventually rot, attract pests, disease, and cause mold and odors. And, no, you cannot live in your storage unit.

Radioactive Materials

The average person isn’t going to have radioactive materials, but there are instances when this can happen. For example, if you have a cat with cancer, she might be treated with a pharmaceutical substance that has traces of radioactive particles. In that case, their litter box materials must be disposed of properly. No radioactive equipment or materials can legally be stored in a storage unit. Heavy fines can be assessed by law enforcement for improper disposal of radioactive materials.

Illegal Drugs and Stolen Property

If an item is illegal to possess, or the item is stolen, then it cannot be stored in your storage unit. Storing stolen goods or illegal substances is a crime.

Tips for Safe Storage

Check Your Lease: Familiarize yourself with your storage facility’s specific rules and regulations.

Prepare Your Items: For items such as lawn mowers and other gas powered equipment, empty the fluids and clean the unit before storage.

Seek Guidance: If you’re unsure about storing a particular item, contact our storage facility managers for clarification.

By following these guidelines, you can create a safer and more secure storage experience for yourself and others.

Are you ready to declutter your home or office and free up space? Self-storage can be a lifesaver, but packing your belongings efficiently is essential for a smooth transition. Follow these expert tips to ensure your belongings are safe, organized, and easily accessible when you need them.

Essential Packing Supplies

Sturdy Boxes: Use sturdy boxes or containers to store your possessions.

Avoid Garbage Bags: Garbage bags can easily tear and the plastic can trap moisture.

Packing Material: Bubble wrap, newspaper, or packing peanuts can protect fragile items.

Quality Tape: Ensure it adheres securely to prevent boxes from opening over time.

Permanent Markers: For clear labeling of boxes.

Tip: Our Fountain Valley location has quality packing supplies for sale.

Packing Strategies

Weight Matters: Pack boxes to a manageable weight for easy lifting and carrying. Keep them stable for stacking by avoiding bulging sides and sunken tops.

Labeling is Key: Clearly label each box with its location and/or contents i.e. Bedroom Quilts, Kitchen Utensils, Office Equipment, Living Room, Bathroom.

Fragile Items: Mark boxes containing breakables with “Fragile, This Side Up” and an arrow pointing up.

Secure Furniture: Use the non-sticky side of the tape to hold bed frames together. Store hardware in plastic bags and tape them to the backside of the furniture.

Organize by Weight: Place heavier items in smaller boxes. Lighter possessions, such as bedspreads, linens, and your favorite blanket, can be packed into larger boxes.

Unit Organization: Store frequently used items up front and maintain a clear path down the center for easy access to boxes in the back.

Preparing Outdoor Equipment

Clean Tools: Wash and dry garden tools to remove dirt and debris and to avoid rust.

Drain Fuel: Drain the fuel tanks of gas powered equipment (automobile, lawn mower, weed wacker, leaf blower) to prevent fuel spills and odors seeping into your other belongings.

One of the pitfalls of do-it-yourself (diy) moving is back injuries. You can avoid this all together by hiring a reliable moving company to pack and move your belongings. If you are moving a short distance or hiring someone is not in the budget, then taking the time to plan out your move will help you avoid accidents and injuries. Below are seven tips to get you started:

Tip #1: Warm Up

Athletes know that warming up the body is the best way to avoid cramps and pulled muscles. Taking a walk around the block and touching your toes a few times will help warm your leg and arm muscles.

Tip #2: Wear a Back Belt

Your local home center may have back belts for sale. Finding one that fits correctly and using it each time you load and unload will help lesson the impact on your back. Don’t rely completely on the belt though, as lifting a heavy load, even while wearing this belt, can leave you flat on your back. At the very least, wearing the belt can serve as a reminder for you to be mindful of your back.

Tip #3: Pack Heavy Items in Small Boxes

Packing books, dishes, and other heavy items in boxes small enough to carry easily, will help keep your back muscles safe. If you cannot lift a box without straining, put it back down and separate the items into two boxes.

Tip #4: Balance the Weight

Boxes are less likely to tip over and fall from your arms if they are balanced. Using enough Styrofoam packing materials or crumpled up newspaper will keep items from shifting out of position.

Tip #5: Lift with Your Legs

Bending your knees and lifting with your legs is the proper way to pick up a load. Lifting with your back straight and carrying the load close to your body, between your shoulders and your waist, will put less strain on the muscles of your back.

Tip #6: Avoid Clutter

Packing your boxes into the truck in reverse order, so when you unload you’ll be taking out what you need first, will lessen the clutter in the pathway and help keep you from tripping on boxes.

Tip #7: Rest a While

Taking short breaks, stretching, and drinking water, before you feel fatigued, will allow your muscles time to rest and rehydrate. If your body is aching, it is telling you to slow down. Listen to your body!

Moving across town or across the country can be stressful, whether you move it yourself or you hire a professional moving company. There are many questions to ponder long before moving day. Here are some ideas to help you decide how to proceed.

#1: Relocation Distance

How far are you moving? Moving items from a small apartment a few miles away can be done on a weekend with a little advanced planning. Moving the contents of a four-bedroom home from Maine to California may require months of planning and packing, as well as, a higher level of organization. Maybe you want to hire a moving company and drive your cars cross-country. If you are not up to the long drive, you can ship the cars by flat bed truck or hire a driver, then, fly over to meet them.

#2: Garage Sale

Will you take everything with you or will you have a garage sale to thin out the load? If you’re just starting out, you may not have many possessions to move. However, if you’ve been in one location for a while, things may have collected without you noticing. Having a garage sale is win-win since the buyers get a good deal and you don’t have to pay to haul unwanted stuff. Anything that is left over can be donated to your local thrift store to further lessen your load.

#3: Temporary Moves

Are you planning on moving back soon? If this is a temporary move, then taking just the necessities and storing the remainder of your possessions at a secure storage facility will save you time and money. The Storage Place offers many sizes of storage units in Orange County and Riverside County, California, with surveillance camera and computerized gate access managed by on-site professionals. Your stuff will be safe and dry while you’re away.

#4: Friends or Professionals

Will your friends be helpful or will they scratch, drop, and step on your favorite things? You know your friends better than us. If you are moving across town and you can count on them to finish the job without major incidents, congratulations! However, if your friends would rather be elsewhere, then leave the moving to the professionals. Contact your local chamber of commerce for recommendations.

#5: Trucks vs Moving Vans

Do you have a friend with a truck, will you rent a truck, or will you hire a moving company? If you are hiring a moving company, they will take a look at your possessions and decide how many vans are needed. If, however, you will be using a smaller truck, plan on making several trips. Small boxes can fit in the trunk of your car, while mattresses and furniture can be securely tied to the bed of a truck.

#6: Moving Insurance

Do your possessions include heavy furniture, fragile vases, or expensive jewelry? While professional movers are typically trained to handle heavy and fragile items, jewelry is best kept in your possession at all times. Contact your insurance company to see what is covered in-case of a mishap, review these Common Moving Mistakes to Avoid presented by Allstate Insurance, and ask the moving company for their insurance guidelines.

Moving Checklist

If you’ve considered the answers to these questions and have decided to go the do it yourself route, then it is up to you to organize each aspect of the move from buying the supplies, to packing effectively, to having snacks prepared for moving day. The Storage Place in Southern California offers this free, printable moving checklist to help you organize your move and relieve some of the stress from moving day.

We wish you happiness in your new place!

Already Covered?

Self-storage unit insurance covers natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and tornados. If you use a storage facility for your important papers, equipment, sporting goods, toys, seasonal clothing, cameras, furniture, or other household or small business items, you might need additional coverage to protect your belongings. Many policies cover your items whether they are physically in your home or office, stored at a secure storage facility, or out with you. A call to your insurance agent can clarify what and how much is covered and whether an amendment to your existing policy or a new policy is the better choice for your circumstances.

Declare Your Valuables

If you store valuables, be sure to declare them individually. Take inventory of these items including original receipts, serial numbers, detailed descriptions, and photographs. Remember to ask your agent what dollar amount is covered in your policy for each common insurance rider such as electronics, jewelry, fine art and antiques, camera equipment, etc., so you know if you need to increase that amount or not.

In Between Homes

If you are temporarily without a home or office; perhaps about to move, or taking an extended vacation overseas; and you don’t have a homeowner’s, small business, or renter’s insurance policy, then, yes, you will need separate coverage. Ask your insurance agent if the policy covers collectibles and other expensive items, stolen property, damage from floods, earthquakes, pests, etc.

No Upselling

Some storage companies will attempt to sell you additional coverage when you sign the paperwork to rent a unit. This is similar to car rental companies wanting to sell you collision insurance. At The Storage Place, our on-site managers know that you probably already have insurance coverage included in your home or business policy, so we don’t “up sell” you for something you don’t need. We will, however, ask you to specify on the rental documents that you understand that you are responsible for your own insurance, so, be sure to check up on this beforehand.

The Storage Place does not endorse any insurance company or insurance website. For your convenience, we are providing this link where you can compare rates on Google search.

Still have questions about insurance for your storage unit contents or other self-storage related items? Feel free to contact our facility managers…

Many businesses endeavor to offer cheap rates for the services they offer and at The Storage Place we strive to do just that. Here are 6 reasons why we think we have some of the cheapest self-storage units in Riverside, California.

#1: Shop Around

Check out our self-storage prices versus our competitors’ pricing to see how we compare for similar size storage units combined with the special features offered at our facility. We expect you’ll find cheaper rates on many of our units.

#2: Month-To-Month Leases

We don’t lock you into a year’s contract, so you pay only for the months that you rent your unit. Upsizing, downsizing, or moving out is easy! Just give one of our managers written notice seven days prior to the next payment due date.

#3: Save on Upstart Costs

Saving on the upstart costs helps you keep more money in your pocket. We wave the start up fee that other facilities charge and we don’t require a deposit. Just pay us prior to each month’s rental and save, save, save!

#4: Easy Access Saves Time and Money

Save time and transportation costs! Rent a unit at our Riverside, CA facility, which is blocks away from the 91 Freeway and 3.5 miles east of the Interstate 15 interchange. This location is also convenient for Corona and Norco residents and businesses.

#5: Small Businesses

For the small businesses that have out-grown their offices, renting space at our storage facility can be less expensive than moving to a larger office, changing your stationary, and buying more furnishings. You can choose from units starting at 20 sq. ft. and going up to 400 sq. ft.

#6: Professional Managers

Our managers are happy to help you select your unit size based on the items you plan to store. Save your money by renting a unit that suits your needs and no larger! We even have a free template tool at the bottom of this page for the do-it-yourselfers.

We all like to think we are the best at what we do and at The Storage Place we strive to do just that. Here are 6 reasons why we think we have some of the best self-storage units in Riverside, CA.

#1: Easy Access Near Two Freeways

The Storage Place, Riverside, CA location is near the 91 Freeway, actually blocks away, and is within 3.5 miles of the Interstate 15 interchange. Could it be any more convenient than that? Exit off of Magnolia Avenue or McKinley Street depending upon which way you are traveling down the 91 Freeway. Check out our map page for detailed directions to 12172 Severn Way, Riverside, CA 92503.

#2: No Deposit Required

Some storage facilities lock you into a year lease. Not us! Our leases are month-to-month so you pay for what you use and you can leave at your convenience. Just let one of our resident managers know in writing seven days before your rent is due for the next month.

#3: Security

When you drive up, the first thing you’ll probably notice is the tall, locked gate. For your security, each customer is given a unique PIN code to access this computerized gate during business hours. Your PIN also opens the gate when you are ready to leave.

Next, look for the surveillance cameras up high on the corners of the buildings. For protection, our on-site managers monitor the camera feeds from their office.

#4: Choices, Choices, Choices

Our Riverside self-storage location has units ranging from 20 to 400 square feet. The smaller ones are indoors and the larger units have roll-up exterior doors. See how cheap they are on our “Pricing and Unit Sizes” page. We also offer outdoor self-storage for automobiles, recreational vehicles, boats, and trailers.

#5: College Students Welcome

Did you know that Riverside, CA has many good opportunities for advancement including trade schools, colleges, and universities? Check out the list on our “Self-Storage for Riverside College and University Students” page. If you are attending USR or any of the other local institutions, and need storage for summer break, come on over! We’re happy to find a place for your books, bicycle, microwave, and storage boxes.

#6: Professional Resident Managers

We have managers at the property seven days a week to help with your self-storage needs. Ready to sign up? Give them a call… Forgot your secure PIN? They can reset it for you. Need boxes and tape? They can direct you to our nearby Lowes and Home Depot! Want to pay in cash? They’re happy to give you a receipt.

As a small business owner in Fountain Valley, CA, maximizing your space and efficiency is crucial for success. Renting a self-storage unit offers a convenient and affordable solution to declutter your workspace, streamline your operations by storing archived files, seasonal inventory, and excess supplies, and flexibility to move to a larger unit or rent a second unit as your business storage needs grow!

Benefits of Self-Storage for Small Businesses

Six ways to use self-storage to boost your business efficiency and sales:

Declutter and Organize Office: Free up valuable office space by storing excess equipment, supplies, and archived files.

Manage Inventory: Store seasonal surplus or excess inventory in a secure storage unit. When demand rises, simply retrieve the items as needed, avoiding stockouts or carrying costs.

Archive Documents: Safely archive important documents that aren’t accessed frequently. This not only declutters your office but also ensures compliance with record retention regulations.

Store Equipment: Store extra office equipment, machinery, or tools in a self-storage unit. This is particularly useful for seasonal businesses or those with fluctuating equipment needs.

Store Trade Show Booth: Keep your trade show booth and associated materials organized and accessible in a storage unit.

Buy in Bulk: Store bulk samples and promotional materials in a storage unit to avoid cluttering your workspace. When needed, retrieve the items for distribution or display.

Six Reasons to Choose The Storage Place

Convenient Location: Our facility is conveniently located in Fountain Valley near the 405 Freeway for easy access.

Do you need a safe and convenient place to store your treasured belongings or seasonal gear? Not all self-storage facilities are created equal. Finding one that prioritizes your needs can make a world of difference. This guide explores the top 5 features that ensure easy access, security, and peace of mind for your stored items.

#1: Easy Access When You Need It

Location matters! Look for a storage facility close to home or work, or conveniently located near a major freeway. Easy access translates to frequent check-ins on your belongings and avoids detours when hauling bulky items. Imagine you’re ready for a weekend getaway. Your boat or RV is conveniently stored near the freeway, eliminating the hassle of navigating tight streets. Load up, hit the road, and be on your way to adventure!

#2: Secure Access with Gate Control

Peace of mind comes with secure access. Modern storage facilities offer computerized gate access systems with unique access codes. While authorized customers can enter, belongings are kept safe from unauthorized visitors. When a tenant moves out, their access is deactivated. New customers? Dedicated parking outside the gate allows for easy access to the office while you inquire and sign up.

#3: Surveillance for Added Security

Advanced security goes beyond gates. Look for facilities with strategically placed surveillance cameras, both indoors and outdoors. Monitors in the main office allow on-site managers to keep a watchful eye across the units and grounds. Highly visible cameras deter potential damage and theft. If you don’t see any security cameras, ask about them!

#4: Flexible Month-to-Month Leasing

Life can be unpredictable. Month-to-month leases offer the flexibility you need. Maybe you’re moving, or a seasonal hobbyist storing equipment, or a college student needing storage only during the summer. Perhaps you’re an avid ATV rider seeking winter storage. Whatever your reason, choose a facility with month-to-month options that adapt to your changing needs and ask to view the terms for your new self-storage unit before signing the lease.

#5: Knowledgeable On-Site Managers

Resident managers are the heart and soul of a great storage facility. They live on-site, ensuring constant upkeep and security. These knowledgeable individuals are available to assist you by phone or in person. Need help choosing a lock, finding a local restaurant on move-in day, or simply have questions about storage options? Resident managers are your go-to resource. Their expertise ensures you get the most out of your self-storage experience.

How much does it cost to rent a public storage unit per month in Southern California?

The cost to rent a public storage unit varies depending upon the location, the size of the unit, and the amenities provided. In Southern California, self-storage typically run anywhere from $40 (for closet size units) to $400 per month for larger (full size) units.
Our facilities service the Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach and the Riverside and Corona areas of Southern California. Fountain Valley offers units sized between 32 sq. ft and 336 sq. ft., while Riverside sizes run between 30 sq. ft. and 400 sq. ft.

Step One

The first step to finding out the price you will pay to rent a unit is to calculate the size needed to store your belongings. Read our article on “How to Choose the Size of Your Self-Storage Unit” and use the free storage template tool at the bottom of the page to help you estimate the size.

Step Two

The next step is to call the manager for the location nearest you – (951) 735-0211 in Riverside / Corona and (714) 964-1607 for Fountain Valley / Huntington Beach. They can confirm if your estimate is accurate or not and advise you of the current monthly price and availability for the unit you seek

Step Three

Next, consider how you will move your items to the self-storage facility. Renting a truck or hiring a moving company adds to the cost, which can run in the hundreds or the thousands depending upon the volume of your belongings

Step Four

Lastly, remember to ask about security and amenities. We offer amenities such as on-site professional managers and our properties are fenced, have security gates that require access codes, and have surveillance cameras.
For your convenience, we are open 7 days a week. Our rentals lease month-to-month with no minimum and no cancellation fees apply. However, late fees do apply if payments aren’t received on time.
